Link between cinema perception and tactical sensations is studied in the Moscow State University
Researchers from the Moscow State University (MSU) studied the association between the perception of film scenes and tactile sensations. The scientists intend to learn further how the psyche creates connections between emotions and sensations coming from different sources.
During the tests, volunteers watched three-minute excerpts from the films, and then determined by feel which of the materials set is associated with the plot. The set included glass, rubber, sandpaper, silk. Researchers wanted to determine what materials are associated with the plots, including elements of ugly or beautiful.
These associations, which speak of the presence of figurative thinking, psychologists usually call cross-modal. People can perceive the color as «juicy», and the sound as «flat», the MSU press service explained. The research uniqueness lies in the fact that films were the impetus for the emergence of associations.
It turned out, that «beauty» is often associated with silk, while «ugliness» is associated with sandpaper. It turned out that associations partly exist due to emotional representations of good and evil, beautiful and ugly. For example, a material that people perceive as sweet they associate with a film, which they also rate as sweet. «That is our emotional and semantic representations work as glue, combining sensations from different modalities» Marina Iosifyan, representative of the Psychology Department (MSU) told.
The study results are published in Multisensory Research.
