One of the six robotic telescopes will operate in Russian observatory
The first telescope will start operate within two months In the Special Astrophysical Observatory RAS, and then it will enter the system of robotic devices for space objects monitoring.
Robotic telescopes will be installed near the main 6-meter telescope in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic. Also, scientists of the observatory expect the arrival of the second telescope in early 2018.
The main purpose of the half-meter telescopes will be rapid response and detection of radio and gamma-ray bursts sources. It is expected that information on the bursts will come from space observatories and the RATAN-600 radio telescope, located in Karachay-Cherkessia. Researchers expect robotic telescopes to help find the sources of bursts location within a few minutes. Then it will allow the sources to be observed using the main 6-meter telescope. Beyond that, telescopes will enable to find exoplanets.
The project is funded by the Russian Science Foundation.
Let’s remind that astronomers from the Breakthrough Listen community recorded repeated rapid radio bursts from a dwarf galaxy located at a distance of three billion light years. Researchers observed for the first time rapid radio bursts lasting several milliseconds in 2007. The nature of these high-power signals is not yet known.
The Karachay-Cherkess Republic is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. It is geographically located in the North Caucasus region of Southern Russia.
