Plesetsk Cosmodrome is preparing to launch a European space probe
Experts of the European Space Agency began preparations for the Sentinel-5P meteorological probe launch at the Plesetsk cosmodrome (the Arkhangelsk Region).
The probe launch is scheduled for the first half of October. The probe was delivered to Arkhangelsk by air, then the container was transported to the cosmodrome by rail. After the surface cleaning the container with the probe was placed in a «clean room». It will be opened tomorrow.
Sentinel-5P will transmit information on pollution in the atmosphere. In particular, the probe will monitor the concentrations and fluxes of carbon, methane, nitrogen and aerosols compounds. The width of the probe’s coverage is about 2.6 thousand kilometers, the press service of the European agency said.
The probe will be carried on the orbit by the launch vehicle «Rockot» with the «Briz» upper stage. The vehicle is based on RS-18 ballistic missile and capable to bring into space devices weighing up to 1.95 tons. For 16 years of use, «Rockot» has launched 60 spacecrafts into orbit.
