Rosatom will construct the nuclear technology center at the highest altitude of all the sites in the world
The Bolivian Nuclear Energy Agency (ABEN) and JSC «State Specialized Design Institute» (part of Rosatom State Corporation) signed a contract for the construction of the Nuclear Research and Technology Center that will be located in El Alto (Bolivia).
This facility will be unique to the global nuclear industry — it will be erected at an altitude of 4,100 meters above sea level. The Center will comprise a reactor facility on the basis of a research water-cooled reactor with a nominal power of up to 200 kW, a multi-purpose experimental gamma-installation, as well as a cyclotron and radiopharmacology complex, engineering facilities and laboratories. Investments in the project will amount to more than 300 million US dollars.
According to the «Rusatom Overseas» official website, the commissioning of the first facilities of the Center is scheduled for 2019. Its work will promote the wide application of nuclear technologies in agriculture, medicine, and industry. The project will allow Bolivia to become a regional leader in nuclear research. Today, there are 245 research reactors in the world, 58 of them are in Russia.
