NPP will power satellites by means of a laser beam

Roscosmos State Corporation ordered the «Arsenal» design bureau to develop a Nuclear Power Plant capable of transmitting energy by means of a laser beam.

«In order to determine the options for the design of the space complex and to ensure the possibility of its phased creation, it is allowed to consider the levels of the output electrical power of NPP from 100 kW to 1000 kW» REGNUM news agency reports.

The main characteristics and design of the spacecraft to be presented in November, 2018.

Meanwhile, the potential invention has already caused an ambiguous reaction. Experts say the orbital Nuclear Power Plant is unpromising, and it is better to use solar batteries for satellites powering. Adherents of the cosmic NPP consider that laser technologies are the thing of the future and they will be useful when sending microsatellites beyond our solar system.

Arsenal Design Bureau is an engineering company active in the fields of space technology, ship artillery and civilian machine building. The company was founded in 1711 and is located in Saint Petersburg in the Russian Federation. It is under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos).
