«Smola» plasma heat source is launched in Novosibirsk
Specialists from the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP) launched a «Smola» spiral magnetic trap. According to the TASS news agency, the installation enables to multiply the heating of the plasma. Using a gas-dynamic trap, which works on the institute basis, scientists have already heated plasma to 10 million degrees. «Smola» will allow to raise this temperature several times.
Physicists want to test two independent principles of reducing longitudinal losses from magnetic traps and associate this trap with a light magnetic field with a «meat grinder» that moves protons in different directions. «Plasma particles tend to fly out of this “meat grinder”, but if we turn the handle backwards, they will move back, so the plasma will remain trapped», Anton Sudnikov, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, explained.
Scientists suggest that turning the handle of the «meat grinder» in the opposite direction, the plasma particles will not be decelerated. They will fly out with acceleration, that will allow to get a prototype of the plasma engine, by which one can go not only to the Moon or Mars, but also to distant planets of the solar system.
«Smola» was created about a year with the support of the Russian Science Foundation. The approximate project cost is 10 million rubles.
