The lifespan of the power unit No 2 of Balakovo NPP is prolonged for 26 years
The Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostekhnadzor) issued a license for further operation of the power unit No 2 of Balakovo NPP until 2043. According to the Rosenergoatom, the new license will be valid for 26 years.
The power unit No 2 of Balakovo NPP produced its first current in 1987. It has been working reliably and safely for 30 years, providing more than 186 billion kWh of electric energy.
In 2012, the Plant’s specialists have started testing the unit’s condition, preparing documents to justifiably extend its operation, and proceeded large-scale modernization works. The design characteristics and physical parameters of the unit were brought into compliance with modern standards and requirements, so the unit’s equipment reached such a technical condition that allowed it to work for an additional period.
Experts from the Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) confirmed the operation safety of the unit No 2.
The Balakovo NPP is an affiliate for the Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located on the left bank of the Saratov water reservoir, 10 kilometers to the north-east from the city of Balakovo, the Saratov Region. The NPP has four power block with modern VVER-1000 reactors (B-320 modification) boasting an electric capacity of 100 megawatts each. The Balakovo NPP is one of the biggest and most contemporary power companies in Russia accounting for 25% of the electric power output in the Volga federal district.
