The USA will extend credit to Energoatom for nuclear storage construction
Interfax-Ukraine informs that risks associated with the construction of the spent nuclear fuel storage in the Chernobyl zone will be insured by the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC).
The Corporation for Private Foreign Investments under the US Government is ready to support a loan of $250 million. The national nuclear power generating company «Energoatom» is intended to attract such a sum of money in October 2017 through Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofAML).
On September 14, OPIC will consider the allocation of «Energoatom» loan at a Board of Directors meeting. The initial sum will be sufficient for the first launch complex of the storage facility construction — four HI-STORM containers, three of which are designed for spent fuel assemblies from VVER-1000 reactors.
The CSSNF construction worth $410 million. It is claimed that the presence of its own nuclear burial ground will reduce Ukraine’s dependence on Russia, allowing to store independently about 169,000 tons of spent fuel per year and reduce annual spending by $50 million.
The storage construction includes 15 stages and will take 16.5 years. It will be built in the Kiev region. The capacity of the CSSNF is 458 containers for 16,529 spent fuel assemblies. For 100 years, spent nuclear fuel from the Rivne, Khmelnitsky and South Ukrainian NPPs will be stored there. The project is being implemented by the American company «Holtec International» on the technology of superficial “dry” storage.
